Day 1 of U.S. Nationals and I’m Sitting Behind a Desk

Sometimes things just don’t work out. I’ve been planning to attend this year’s long course championships ever since I wasn’t able to go to our only long course swim meet in Victoria way back in March, again because of work commitments. I would have thought the middle of August, smack in the middle of the slow season, would have been proof against this happening but I would be wrong. The original plan was to spend a couple of leisurely weeks with my sister while working some part days for a client, then head off for Texas for the long weekend, and return to LA for a few more days to wrap up my work. That had to be scrapped when I had to twice delay my departure to deal with client problems and to complete some engagements (try telling a client you’re not going to deal with his tax problem until you get back from vacation in three weeks!). I had another client move up the time for an expert opinion because of available court dates which meant flying down I was looking at working right through the week and then squeezing in my opinion during the swim meet. Not the best preparation for an important meet but those were my plans until I discovered some major accounting problems early this week which required me to reconstruct events going back as far as 2003. So regretfully I had to sacrifice my swimming this weekend. It’s a shame because attending a serious Masters swim meet would be an experience and would have given me the opportunity to meet up and talk with some of the best masters swimmers in the world as well as several prominent bloggers. Wieslaw Musial, the Canadian backstroker masters world record holder in the 200 back for my age group will be there, as will Steve Woods, the current 100 back masters world record holder (you should be able to tell I consider myself a backstroker). Perhaps next year things will work out better.

Oh, Scott, I am so sad to hear this! I know that you had really been looking forward to this, and it is so disappointing when work intervenes like this in other important parts of life.

I'm sorry to hear that you are not at the US Nationals. I can understand that it can be difficult to find time for things like vacation when things suddenly arise at work. Hopefully you'll be able to go to a few meets in the fall, so that you can get ready for the 2008 Long course season.

Sorry you missed the meet: you missed a HOT time... and I do mean the temperature (100 for most of the weekend). Hopefully next year.

And if you really want an excuse to visit Texas, the U.S. short-course meet is in Austin in May...

That sucks. There's always next year, though. Chin up.

Not only was it hot (something which wouldn't come as a surprise for most as it was Texas in mid-August) but the times posted were hot (as in fast) as well. Twenty seven world and nine national records set in the individual events, and four national records in the relays. My province's very own Bonnie Pronk set a world record in the 65-69 women's 50m Breast, while the home team, The Woodlands Masters Swim Team, set a national record in the women's 72-99 200 medley relay. So a very successful swim meet. Unfortunately(?) for Texas there are plenty of short course meets for me to attend locally, the big attraction of the U.S. Long Course National Championships was the fact it was long course. To me that's the 'official' distance for competitive swimming and whenever I think or refer to 'best' times I always use my long course times. So missing the Championships means I only have the results of my qualifying meet to improve on after nearly a year of swimming. As those times were achieved right after tax season I don't think they're very representative of what I can do. It's very frustrating.

So... you should go to the U.S. Spring Nationals, and swim YARDS, because it will be completely different/irrelevant to your best times. ;)

Or you could just go so you can have an excuse to go eat Tex-Mex at Chuy's...

Starting out swimming I swam in a 50 yard long course pool called the Crystal Gardens. I wrote about the experience which you can find early on in my blog. I didn't like the distance one bit as Canada doesn't recognize yard distances for record purpose (let's be frank here - the entire world doesn't recognize yard distances except for U.S. college) and my strong bias against swimming in 'yard' pools has never flagged. I'd just have some orphan times I would never improve upon sitting around taunting me with their slowness and that would drive me crazy.

Ahhh... but they'd all be best times :)
